Rachel Carson Aguila and her twin brother, Kenny, were close. Close enough
for her to know he hadn't died in a plane crash in South America, although
every one else was convinced he had. Leaving her best friend listening for
the phone, Rachel heads off to South America to find him. But instead of
Kenny, Rachel stumbles into a plot to find Gran Paititi, rumored to be a
bigger hidden treasure than El Dorado. Suckered into tagging along, Rachel
heads into the Amazon, thinking she is on her way to help Kenny.
Unfortunately for her, instead of heading to a crash sight, she is heading
into a jungle full of poisonious snakes, poisoned blowdarts, and ancient
creatures more ferocious than a raptor. As one by one, her expedition
dwindles, she helps solve the puzzles that take them further into the home
of a lost Inca civilization. When the group finds out that what they're
looking for doesn't exist, will they survive to escape? Will Rachel be
reunited with her brother? Or will she die, lost in a forgotten world?

This was a great book. Mr. Marcotte has written an excellent book, one that
would most definitely make a great movie. Although it was a little slow on
the take off, (and what great movie isnt?) The Gold in the Shadows gives
flight into a breathtaking story about a lost civilization, forgotten by
mankind, and the lengths its inhabitants would go to keep it that way. This
book will wrap you up in its coils, and squeeze you tight in its grasp,
until you have finished the very last page. Mr. Marcotte has also done an
excellent job bringing current mankinds greed to the forefront, and making
us, the readers, take a long hard look at the destruction we bring and leave
behind. I would definately recommend this book as a keeper.
