Madame Marcotte photo

The above photo was taken in the Louvre Museum in Paris. The painting was done in 1826 by the famed French painter Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres and is entitled "Madame Marcotte." A few sites say that the title is "Madame Marie Marcotte," but that is incorrect. The decription on the Louvre title plate is just "Madame Marcotte," and her given name was not Marie. The woman's husband was, however, Marin Marie Marcotte, so the name Madame Marie Marcotte might still be appropriate, as Marin is sometimes referred to as Marie (sometimes used as a masculine name, too, in France). So, if he is Mr. (Marin-) Marie Marcotte, then "Mrs.(or Madame) Marie Marcotte" would not be altogether incorrect. The pretty young woman standing next to the painting is my wife, Robin Marcotte, and this photo was taken during our 1990 visit.

The painting currently is displayed on the second floor of the Sully wing of the Louvre, but it is occaionally relocated or loaned out for exhibit tours.

The Madame Marcotte depicted in the painting was Suzanne-Clarisse Salvaing de Boissieu. She was the sister-in-law of Charles Marcotte, a patron of Ingres, who commisoned several portraits by the artist.
