T his is a portrait of Charles-Marie-Jean-Baptist-François Marcotte d'Argenteuil (1773 - 1864). The painting was done by the French Master Jean-Auguste-Dominiques Ingres, in 1810, and hangs in the National Gallery of Art at the Smithsonian, in Washington D.C.

Charles was not one our ancestors, since ours were already in Canada by 1667.
This Charles Marcotte was living in Paris as a senior civil servant (Inspector General
of Waterways and Forests) during Napoleon's government. Most likely he is descended from
the same Marcotte roots, but thus far I have only been able to connect him back to
Guyon Marcotte of Picardie, who was born about the same period as our ancestor Arthus Marcotte,
whose father is believed to have come from Picardie or the Pas-de-Calais (part of Flanders at the time).
Approximately 20 portraits by Ingres were said to have been commissioned by or for various
Marcotte family members in France. Some of the others for which I have found copies are those
of , a sketch of her husband Marin Marcotte
a pencil sketch of Charles' daughter Marie, and pencil sketches of Louise Duclos-DuFresnoy Marcotte
(mother of Charles Marcotte d'Argenteuil, Lousie Becquet de Layens Marcotte (wife of Charles Marcotte),
a sketch of Charles Marcotte d'Argenteuil with the Vatican in the background,(done in 1811)
and one other sketch of Charles Marcotte,
done by Ingres in 1828, on the occasion of Charles marcotte's marriage.

I have a list of several others, which include portraits of each of Charles Marcotte's sisters
his son Joseph, two of his sons-in-law, Rohault de Fleury and Legentil
and Charles' two daughters, Marie, and Louise-Marie-Chantal
The Madame Marcotte painting in the Louvre was Charles Marcotte's
sister-in-law (born Suzanne-Clarisse Salvaing de Boissieu).

The painting of Pope Pius VII at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C.
was also painted by Ingres for his friend and patron, Charles Marcotte d'Argenteuil.
Two of Charles' sons-in-law, Alexandre Legentil (who married Marie Marcotte) and Hubert Rohault de
Fleury (who married Louise-Marie-Chantal Marcotte) were the visionaries behind the
contruction of Paris' magnificient Sacre-Coeur basilica, in the Montmartre district.

of the Marcotte family see Guyon Marcotte's descendants.
